Present-day married actresses do manage to find work and many of them continue to tackle challenging rolesz
A recent example is Kareena Kapoor. She marked her return to the studios after marriage to Saif Ali Khan last November with the sexy item number Fevicol se in Dabangg 2, giving out a clear signal that being Mrs Khan won't affect her penchant at glamourous roles. Kareena has two big films coming up this year.
One of them, Prakash Jha's Satyagraha, was signed before her marriage. Buddy Karan Johar has roped her in for one of his productions, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein opposite Imran Khan.
Kareena's in-laws of course have been supportive of her continuing working in films. They have said she will have no restrictions about the roles she chooses or the scenes that she does on screen.
The most successful married actresses in recent years have been Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Kajol. Ash did over half a dozen starring roles since her marriage to Abhishek Bachchan in 2007 and only slowed down after pregnancy. She has declared she will be back once she is ready to work again.
Kajol's has been the most dramatic case among all married actresses. She got married to Ajay Devgn at the peak of her career in 1999 but that did not stop Bollywood from flooding her with plum offers. Irrespective of the occasional break owing to childbirths twice over the past decade, Kajol still continues to be a star.
While these actresses have smartly balanced career and marriage, there has been the opposite trend too. Juhi Chawla kept her marriage to industrialist Jay Mehta a secret for long in a bid to save her sagging career.
Lately, rumours have been rife that Rani Mukerji has been married to Yash Raj Films scion Aditya Chopra for a while but that she is hiding the fact because she is scared it could affect her career. The rumours were stoked further recently when Shatrughan Sinha, at an event commemorating Yash Chopra, referred to the actress as Rani Chopra. While YRF scrambled to send out a clarification, Shotgun refused to retract his statement later. We look at Bollywood divas who are married to the job.
1.Sridevi

Last outing: Sridevi made a remarkable comeback at the age of 49 with English Vinglish last year. Her starring role marked her return to the big screen for the first time in seven years. The film's success broke the myth that a heroine-oriented Hindi film starring an aged actress cannot be a hit.
Quick check: Considered the most powerful female star of the eighties, Sridevi quit after marriage to Boney Kapoor. Her last big release was Judaai, which released in 1997 shortly after her marriage. Sridevi was last seen on the big screen in the long-delayed Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin opposite Akshay Kumar. The film bombed. She had an unsuccessful stint on TV in the early 2000s with the sitcom Malini Iyer.
Coming up: She will be a part of Mr India 2. Also, Kamal Haasan has expressed interest in making a film with her once again. Neither project is confirmed yet.

Last outing: Madhuri's last release was the Yash Raj Films' production Aaja Nachle in 2007. The film banked on her dancing skills but flopped.
Quick check: Madhuri quit Bollywood after a glorious reign in the eighties and the nineties to settle in the US with her doctor hubby. Last year, husband Sriram Nene gave up his medical practice in Los Angeles and came down to India with Madhuri and their two sons. They plan to start a production house now even as Madhuri gets ready to make another comeback.
Coming up: Her latest comeback, the Vishal Bhardwaj-produced Dedh Ishqiya, has been in the making for a while now but the film promises a strong role for Madhuri. She will also be seen in the Anubhav Sinha-produced Gulab Gang, as a social crusader.
3.Vidya Balan

Last outing: Vidya Balan was last seen doing the rather tepid item number Mala jau de in the Vidhu Vinod Chopra-produced Ferrari Ki Sawaari. Her last starring role was Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani. The film saw critical acclaim as well as box-office success.
Quick check: Vidya made a resounding debut in 2005 with Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta, cutting a distinct image for herself amidst Bollywood's size-zero beauties. A few slips such as Salaam-e-Ishq, Eklavya and Halla Bol apart, she has largely had a roster of hits, most of them being heroine-oriented projects that helped her carve a niche. Her National Award-winning role in The Dirty Picture has been the high point of her career.
Coming up: Vidya will next be seen in Rajkumar Gupta's Ghanchakkar opposite Emraan Hashmi. She also has Shaadi Ke Side Effects coming up with Farhan Akhtar.

She stars opposite Imran Khan in Johar's production, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. Her other upcoming film is Prakash Jha's Satyagraha but she had signed that project before marriage.

Quick check: Kajol could be the mascot of all successful married actresses in Bollywood. She quit at the height of popularity in 1999 to marry Ajay Devgn, and promptly returned with a slew of hits. Since marriage, she has taken breaks twice, owing to childbirth, but managed to return with hits each time.
Coming up: She will be seen doing a cameo in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express. Kajol is also set to lend her voice to Karan Johar's animated film Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, a film that was mooted quite some time ago but is yet to take off.

However, now with rumours of her marriage breaking up (something she has denied), interesting roles seem to be coming her way.
Coming up: Chitrangada's next release is the John Abraham-co starrer I, Me Aur Main (above), scheduled to open next week. The rom-com marks a glam makeover attempt for her after she failed to get that effect right with her dud item dance Kaafirana in Joker last year. Talks are also on for a starring role in Mishra's Mehrunissa.
7.Sonali Bendre

Judging popular shows such as India's Got Talent, Indian Idol, Hindustan Ke Hunarbaaz and India's Best Dramebaaz has made her a bigger star on TV than she ever was in films even as other past-prime actresses struggle to make a mark on the small screen.
